Chapter 8

Sunday was cold and snowy—and that was just in Denver. By the time they arrived in Georgetown the temperature was well below freezing and light snow was falling. None of that seemed to deter the mass of people who were wandering the town’s streets, the carolers outside one of the shops, or the musicians on the bandstand.

Brian and Conley didn’t mind it either, as they’d dressed for the weather. They wandered from booth to booth and into the shops, commenting on what each one had to offer.

“Are you planning on having a Christmas tree?” Conley asked at one point while looking at various ornaments.

“I hadn’t really thought about it, but sure, why not?”

Of course with Brian’s reply, Conley began to buy rather than look. While he did, Brian wandered to another part of the shop.

“Perfect,” he murmured when he came to a stop at one of the shelves holding small hand-carved and painted sculptures. What had caught his eye was a Phoenix, perhaps ten inches tall, its wings outspread as if it was about to fly away. He looked back at Conley, seeing he was totally involved in choosing ornaments. Then he took the Phoenix from the shelf, impressed by the intricate work on the feathers and head.

“That’s a beautiful piece,” one of the shop’s clerks commented as she came up beside him. “Are you interested in buying it?”

“I am, but…” He glanced at Conley. Thankfully, he had his back to him at the moment.

The clerk obviously caught where he was looking and smiled. “It’s for him, I bet. Let me box it up while he’s busy. I’ll meet you at the counter.” She took it from Brian. “There,” she said a few moments later setting a box, in one of the store’s fancy bags, on the counter. He paid, thanking her for all her help just as Conley came over, carrying enough ornaments, Brian thought, for at least two trees.

When he said as much, Conley replied, “They’re all great and I couldn’t make up my mind. If we need two trees, so be it, although I think you’re over-estimating by a lot.”

An hour later they’d visited several more shops and were laden down with their purchases. They walked to the restaurant they’d eaten at on their last visit, only to find it packed, with a long line of people waiting to get in.

“It’ll be the same with all of them, I bet,” Brian said.

“Then we’ll check out the food booths.”

“They probably won’t have anything you’ll eat.”

“You might be surprised.”

It took some strolling, while juggling their packages, but they found one which sold various cheeses. Conley bought a sampler, eating from it while Brian munched on a brat with sauerkraut and spicy mustard. Deciding it was time to head home while the roads were still passable, they made one more stop to buy roasted chestnuts and returned to the car.

“That was fun,” Brian said when they were on the road. He peeled a chestnut, popping it into his mouth.

“It was.
